Niacinamide: The All-Rounder Skin Care Ingredient

A popular skin care ingredient for good reason, niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3 or Niacin is a key vitamin in the human body. In skincare, the benefits of niacinamide are broad, making this multitasking ingredient suitable for many skin concerns and suitable for all skin types. Read to discover why you should include niacinamide based products into your skin care routine.

WHAT IS NIACINAMIDE?

Niacinamide is a small molecule able to easily penetrate the skin barrier.

Our natural production of niacin slows down as we age. This affects our microcirculation, reduces our production of collagen and elastin, and increases the skin’s sensitivity to the sun.

A lack of niacin can become a primary cause of skin ageing.

BENEFITS OF NIACINAMIDE

Niacinamide, when applied topically, can partly compensate for any shortage. In addition it has a many benefits and is good for:

— Protecting skin against UV exposure

— Decreasing pigmentation

— Restoring the skin barrier

— Reducing inflammation

— Helping to regulate sebum

— Helping skin retain moisture

— Stimulating collagen and elastin production

WHEN TO USE NIACINAMIDE?

We recommend using niacinamide based products as part of an effective anti-age strategy to stimulate key skin processes and protect skin from environmental damage.

Niacinamide benefits on skin have been scientifically confirmed.

When applied regularly, documented effects over 4 weeks include skin retaining 24% more water in the epidermis, an increase of collagen synthesis by more than 50%, as well as a decrease in pigmentation and a reduction in acne.

WHO CAN USE IT AND IS NIACINAMIDE SAFE TO USE DURING PREGNANCY?

It's important to note that due to niacinamide’s small molecular weight and its ability to stimulate capillaries, skin can flush and can be accompanied by a sensation of warmth.

This is a normal reaction and not a sign of irritation or allergy. In most cases, skin redness subsides after 30–60 minutes. While harmless, this reaction can be exaggerated if skin is thinner due to retinol-based or AHA-based skincare.
