Different Skin Types

Identifying your skin type is the key to choosing the right products to keep it healthy and to give your skin what it needs.

Here at Meder Beauty we follow the classifications of Dr Leslie Baumann who outlines skin types from your genetics as the following:

SENSITIVE OR NON-SENSITIVE
OILY OR DRY

Sensitive skin is something you’re born with, as this is down to the reaction of your nervous system to stimuli rather than your skin itself.

Oily or dry skin types are determined by the activity of your sebum glands. Some people can be born with more active sebum glands leading to oilier skin, while others have less active sebum glands and will experience dryer skin.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY SKIN IS SENSITIVE?

Skin sensitivity can change at certain periods of life, for example during pregnancy. While skin can also become sensitised due to a variety of external factors, stress, overuse of retinol products, UV damage.

Our go-to checklist is an easy way to determine. If you have 4 or more of the below, it’s likely your skin is sensitive.

- SKIN IRRITABILITY
- STINGING
- BURNING
- HEAT
- TAUTNESS
- ITCHING
- PAIN
- DISCOMFORT
- REDNESS
- FLUSHES
IS MY SKIN TYPE NORMAL?

All skin types are normal. We don’t like to use the term normal, as having more active sebum glands for example or less active sebum glands are both perfectly healthy.

You’ll find the word ‘Normal’ on our Salva-Derm cream but really what we mean is ‘more balanced’ making it a good daily face cream for both sensitive skin and those without an immediate tendency for either oily or dry skin.

WHAT IS COMBINATION SKIN?

Combination skin is a term often used to describe skin when it’s hard to determine the tendency. You will still fall along the spectrum of either oily skin or dry skin, but circadian
processes can make it difficult to figure out.

For example, a shiny T-zone during the day is normal and healthy as this is the time when sebum glands are most active.

If you feel your skin is a little drier at night, again this is normal, as sebum gland activity is
suppressed in the evening.

This can be managed and corrected with skincare.

IS MATURE A SKIN TYPE?

Mature skin is a chronological skin type, meaning if you’re lucky to live long enough - you’ll
get it. As skin ages our genetic skin type, oily or dry will determine how better protected our skin is as we age. Typically, oily skin is better protected as you get older.
