For example, deep skin cells, dermal fibroblasts, continue to produce the essential structural protein of the skin, collagen and elastin, while losing the ability to arrange them in three-dimensional structures.
Arranging collagen and elastin into skin structures is done by special chaperone proteins, which appear to be activated in deep sleep. When sleep is insufficient, randomly distributed collagen and other proteins fail to perform their functions. In particular, they can’t create the thick organised structure of firm healthy skin.
Eventually, the face acquires the characteristic fatigued look, which may become more and more pronounced if sleep deprivation persists.
HOW CAN WE HELP SKIN AT NIGHT?
Getting a full 7-8 hours of sleep is beneficial for skin, but realistically it isn’t always possible. Today’s world is full of stress, life doesn’t always allow sufficient time for rest and recuperation, not everyone is able to fall asleep easily and wake up rested and happy.
